Things to Think About

“If you ban the dragons in life, you also ban the heroes.” Andrew Solomon

I think it is only natural for us, at times, to wish for a simpler existence, one in which we didn’t have to deal with some of the problems that exist in a world that is becoming more complex by the day.  Depending on where we are in the cycle of life, the “dragons” could be financial, about relationships, our career, business in general, self-doubt, just to name a very few.  I know because I am human and I have faced these dragons and I’m sure I will face more.  But, the saving grace is that when I face one of life’s dragons, I always call to mind a symbol that more than 20 countries use in their coats-of-arms or in honorary orders of merit.  I am referring, of course, to the image of St. George slaying the dragon.  There are times, to be sure, when the sword is very heavy and our spirits are at a low ebb as we contemplate our dragon, but Solomon’s words remind us that without the dragon, without the resolve to slay it, without taking that first step toward the dragon, we would never have the feeling of confidence that comes from slaying it.  Which, by the way, makes the other dragons that much easier to conquer.

Good luck on your journey!
