Things to Think About

We work to become, not to acquire.” Elbert Hubbard

What an interesting perspective to contemplate: becoming, not acquiring.  To me, this quote doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with acquiring things in life—a home, a savings account, or comfort in one’s surroundings.  I think Hubbard’s words are challenging us to clarify our purpose in life. Think about it for a moment. If someone asked you how you would like to be remembered after your death, what would you say?  My guess is that your answer would be more along the lines of having made a difference in some way, having been a loving spouse or parent, having helped others release their potential, or having made a lasting contribution to society in some way.  Compare that to being remembered as having worn nice clothes, having a collection of cuff links, or cars, or jewelry.  Sounds pretty hollow doesn’t it?  So, here’s the question.  Are your daily thoughts and actions taking you closer to, or further away from, the you that you want to be?

Good luck on your journey!
