Things to Think About 108

“To be authentic literally means to be your own author.” (Greek root Autos meaning self) “Leaders learn from others, but are not made by others.” Warren Bennis

“I would argue that more leaders have been made by accident, circumstance, sheer grit, or will than have been made by all the leadership courses put together.” Warren Bennis

Warren Bennis has contributed as much, or more, to our understanding of leadership than anyone else I am aware of. In these two quotes he shines a light clearly on the role of personal responsibility in becoming a leader. While it’s true that outside elements—circumstances, accidents, gurus, et al—have influence on one’s behavior, it’s a choice—a personal decision—to become a leader.

Good luck on your journey.
