These words, uttered more than 200 years ago, by someone who is considered to be one of the greatest naval commanders in history, remind us that winning—conquering a formidable foe—must involve risk of one kind or another. Whether you’re trying to “win” a promotion, a job interview, the largest account you have ever competed for or, the attention and engagement of those who look to you for leadership, the time will come when you have to step out of your comfort zone in order to differentiate yourself from your competitors. Becoming comfortable with taking intelligent risks is like training to run a marathon—you begin with small steps, but you are diligent about practicing and, one day you’re ready for the big event.
