Things to Think About 053

“We become the stories we tell ourselves.” Skekar Kapur on TED.com

What an elegantly simple way to describe the self-fulfilling prophesies we create in our own lives every day. Stop for a moment and think about the stories you are telling yourself. Are you pleased that you deceived someone? Are you pleased you helped someone? Do your stories usually contain “Well, everybody else does it.”, or, “No one will ever find out anyway.”? How about, “If I were that person, that is how I would like to be treated and that’s why it’s important to do this.”, or, It’s not going to be easy, but it is the right thing to do.”?

Think how these different story elements begin to create the person you become. Are they different from the person you want to be—the person you want others to see? If you said these stories out loud in a room full of people, would you be proud of yourself? The stories we tell ourselves create the thoughts and actions that define us. Could you benefit from a little story editing?
