Things to Think About
“I calculated once how many times I fell during my skating career — 41,600 times, but here’s the funny thing: I got up 41,600 times. That’s the muscle you have to build in your psyche — the one that reminds you to just get up.” Scott Hamilton
Some accomplished athletes are wonderful at sharing meaningful, common-sense insights from their sporting experience that easily apply to our daily lives. They resonate because we can actually see them in our mind’s eye. This quote from 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist, Scott Hamilton, is a great example of that. To me, what Hamilton is talking about is the role resilience plays in success, however you personally define success. In addition, he reminds us that the “muscle” of resilience needs to be built up by using it when facing adversity. And, finally, “just get up”. You don’t need a plan at that moment other than just getting up. There’s a funny thing about adversity. It is a cowardly bully and when you do get up to face it, like all cowardly bullies, it retreats. Today might just be the perfect day to start your new workout.
Good luck on your journey!
